I’ve been there. I spent two years in addiction with the spectre of PTSD riding shotgun. There were days where all I could do was to float; to keep my head above water and try to cope with the urges. There were calm days when I had the clarity to move forward; to assess, look around, ask questions, and feel motivated to change. Then, thankfully, there were days that I could muster the strength and courage to fight; to push hard to regain what I had lost and recover from my addiction.

Float, so tomorrow you may move.

Move, so tomorrow you may fight.

Fight, so tomorrow you may recover.

Recover, so tomorrow you may live free.

(Mark Nasmith served 31 years as an Air Combat Systems Operator in the Royal Canadian Air Force) Since my recovery, even before my retirement, I chose to help others, both military and police, serving and retired, as well as others, to overcome what I had faced. I had help, and want to help others. “Float Move Fight” originates with naval damage control priorities in combat; in order to win the ship must fight. In order to fight, the ship must move. In order to move, the ship must float. I believe this is an accurate metaphor for the struggles of addiction.

Free recovery groups for Canadian military, police and first-responders (serving, and retired)

Mark facilitates weekly addiction recovery groups for those with a service background. The groups are discussion-based and built on the SMART Recovery pathway https://smartrecovery.org/ . For the safety, privacy and comfort of our attendees, the meetings are closed to the public. To access the meetings, please send Mark an email ( mark@float-move-fight.ca ) with the following information:

  • First name

  • Service occupation (serving or retired), e.g., 9-1-1 operator, police officer, firefighter, corrections officer, military veteran, paramedic, etc.

  • General geographic location, e.g., province, city

When your background is verified, you will receive a link to a closed meeting for military & police, or, first-responder personnel. The meetings are:

  • Confidential: I have no obligation or reporting responsibility to any organization, nor will I divulge who attended or what was said

  • Voluntary: attend weekly, or monthly, or at your preference. Speaking at meetings is not required. Sometimes listening is what we need

  • Free: there is no cost, obligation or commitment. This is my voluntary outreach to my peers who serve

If further services are desired, we may discuss individualized coaching options, but the meetings are always free.
